Groucho Marx, born Julius Henry Marx on October 2, 1890, in New York City, was an iconic American comedian, actor, writer, and singer. He was the most recognizable member of the Marx Brothers comedy team, which included his brothers Chico, Harpo, Gummo, and Zeppo. Groucho was known for his quick wit, distinctive appearance featuring a greasepaint mustache, bushy eyebrows, glasses, and cigar, and his fast-talking, wisecracking comedic style.
He began his career in vaudeville and transitioned to Broadway and film, starring in classics such as "Duck Soup" and "A Night at the Opera." His on-screen persona was a clever, satirical critic of social norms and authority. After the Marx Brothers' film career slowed, Groucho successfully transitioned to radio and television, most famously hosting the quiz show "You Bet Your Life" from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. The show highlighted his quick improvisational humor rather than traditional quiz elements.
Groucho was married three times and had three children. Later in life, he authored several books, including his autobiography and collections of letters. He made a notable return to the stage in the 1970s with a one-man show and received a special Academy Award recognizing his career contributions. Groucho Marx passed away on August 19, 1977, leaving a lasting legacy in comedy and popular culture.
