Terence MacSwiney (1879–1920) was an Irish writer, playwright, and political leader who became internationally known for his uncompromising stand during the Irish War of Independence.
As Lord Mayor of Cork, MacSwiney was arrested by British authorities and began a hunger strike in Brixton Prison, London. His sacrifice, lasting 74 days, drew worldwide support and attention to the Irish cause for freedom. MacSwiney’s legacy lives on as a symbol of courage, resistance, and intellectual conviction, and his writings, especially "Principles of Freedom," remain influential to this day. He is remembered for his integrity, artistic spirit, and unwavering dedication to his people and ideals.
